Cyclist Alberto Contador vows to defend himself to the end over failing doping test.

Tour de France champion Alberto Contador said on Friday (January 28) he was disappointed with a one-year ban handed down to him by the Spanish cycling federation (RFEC) for failing a doping test.

Contador faces a ban and the loss of the 2010 Tour de France title if the proposed ban is followed through. He says that the chemicals found in his body came from contaminated meat, and the amount was too small to have any performance-enhancing effect.

"Given this situation and all that I've seen so far, it has allowed me to see how poor this sport is, and the number of gaps it has, this sport that I love, the sport for which I am giving my life and I've suffered so much to reach where I am and now based on a rule that is completely obsolete they want to throw everything I've done to the ground and lose everything I've achieved so far," an emotional Contador told a news conference adding that he had no plans to retire from cycling as he had threatened to do if he was punished.
