Malaysia, (Next Media) - The first floating liquefied natural gas project is set to go into operation in 2015.
The natural gas extraction unit, known as PETRONAS Floating LNG1, or PFLNG1, will be located in Malaysia, roughly 180 kilometers off the coast of Sarawak.
The unit is 60 meters wide and 300 meters long, and has a capacity of producing 1.2 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year.The unit will be anchored above a natural gas site appropriate site, and can process, purify and liquefy natural gas without bringing it to a plant on shore. Carrier vessels will regularly visit the unit to pick up liquefied natural gas, then directly transport the resource to locations on land.
The process eliminates the need for complicated and expensive pipelines to transport gas to land-based plants for liquefaction before delivery to areas that need it.
