Volvo to build ‘crashproof’ car by 2020

Next Media - Volvo says it is developing “no death” cars that can drive themselves and cannot be crashed. Volvo says the cars will be on sale by 2020 and that some aspects of its “crashproof” technology will be available by 2014.

The cars would be equipped with sensors that would monitor nearby cars, pedestrians and road signs. The sensors would activate controls on the engine, steering wheel and brakes to make sure the car maintains a safe distance from other cars, stays in its lane and stops to avoid accidents and responds to speed limit and other road signs.

In the future, these cars could drive autonomously by joining a train of other cars. As they approach their destination, drivers would take control and leave the train.
