The cars would be equipped with sensors that would monitor nearby cars, pedestrians and road signs. The sensors would activate controls on the engine, steering wheel and brakes to make sure the car maintains a safe distance from other cars, stays in its lane and stops to avoid accidents and responds to speed limit and other road signs.
In the future, these cars could drive autonomously by joining a train of other cars. As they approach their destination, drivers would take control and leave the train.
