An Indian court sends controversial godman Asaram Bapu, who has been charged for sexually assaulting a minor to 14 days in judicial custody.
JODHPUR, RAJASTHAN, INDIA (SEPTEMBER 02, 2013) (ANI) - An Indian court sent controversial godman Asaram Bapu, who has been charged for sexually assaulting a minor to 14 days in judicial custody on Monday (September 02).
The 16-year-old girl had filed a formal complaint at the Kamla Market Police Station in New Delhi in which she told the police that Asaram Bapu assaulted her on August 15 when she had gone to hisAshram for some treatment.Defence Counsel of Asaram Bapu, K. K. Manan, said the judge had agreed to take up his client's bail application on Tuesday (September 03).
"The investigating agency sought a 14-day judicial remand, which was granted. After that we requested the court for medical test and signature on the case diary, which the court accepted. Following that we moved bail application, which will come up for hearing tomorrow (September 03) at 11 o'clock," he said.
The Godman was produced before the judge because his one-day long custody in the police had ended.
Asaram Bapu was asked to be present before the police on August 30, but after he, was found to be holed up in Indore, a police team from Jodhpur, went to his hermitage in Indore on Saturday (August 31) and after prolonged questioning took him in to custody.
In the wee hours of Sunday (September 01), a cavalcade of police vehicles brought Bapu at Indorein central state of Madhya Pradesh to be transported to Jodhpur in the neighbouring state ofRajasthan.
While Asaram Bapu has been at the receiving end after the incident hit the headlines, his Mission has claimed that it had been a handiwork of his adversaries.
Born on April 17, 1941, Asaram Bapu preaches the existence one supreme conscious in every human being; be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh or others.
Earlier, his mission was in the news for the reported death of two young inmates whose bodies were found close to the campus of his hermitage. Besides these, there have been reports of land grabbing by his mission across the country.
